Surgical Observation on the Traumatic Facial Scars

Abstract
The revision of scars was performed in the past only for functional reasons, but it is now being done commonly for cosmetic improvement, even for scars which are not too visible.
Whenever the plastic surgeon deals with the patients who expect the scars to be erased by modern technique, it is imperative to explain the limitations of surgery. This obseration attempts to study the socio-medical aspects concerning traumatic facial scars that occupy a large number of patients in a plastic surgery department.
1. Two hundred and ninty six patients of purely traumatic-facial scars were seen in this Department from October 1974 to June 1976. Of those seventy nine patients received scar revision. Among the c perated cases, 68.4% were female patients. The average age at scar revision was 23 and that seemed to coincide with marriage and the beginning of an active social life.
Fifty two percent of the traumatic facial scars were the result of injuries in the first decade of life and the most frequent cause was accidents at home and fighting was the next most common.
3. The postoperative splinting on the revised area is very important to prevent bleeding and adjacent tissue pull. Instead of wrapping the face with an Ace bandage, Steri-strips and Plasshell attached with spongp were usad with good results. The interlesional injection of steroids or radiation therapy was not necessary_ in our series.
